A chilly day turned slowly sunny. The Riverside had been staging behind-closed-doors matches; fans wandered aimlessly outside, banging their heads against some mad bugger’s wall. Two passive-aggressive security men – emboldened by football’s Covid-induced self-importance, and clearly with nothing better to do – warned me about “taking lots of pictures”. I gave up and went to visit Ayresome Park’s sorry remains.
